The Independent MBA Student of the Year Award

SOTY Award 2014

The Association is the advocate for the MBA, committed to its recognition and reputation as the leading international business qualification. Recognising achievement through The Independant MBA Student of the Year Award is an important part of our advocacy role. 

We seek highly-skilled and highly-motivated MBAs who are on the path of becoming the leaders of tomorrow for the most sought-after accolade in the business education arena: The MBA Student of the Year. 

The winner will boast an excellent academic record, show entrepreneurial initiative and outstanding career progression; demonstrating extraordinary achievements in the face of challenges or adversity will be a bonus.  

The award comes with media exposure, the role of ambassador for the Association of MBAs and a £1000 cash prize (£500 for three runners-up).

Eligibility

Accredited schools are invited to nominate one student for the Award, to be selected from those enrolled on accredited programmes during the 2013/2014 academic year. Students can be nominated from full time, part time and distance learning programmes, however only one nomination can be accepted from each school.

Submit your form by email to c.douglas@mbaworld.com no later than 17:00GMT on 30 May 2014.

Schools are asked to nominate one contact person to co-ordinate the internal selection.

To assist in nominating the candidate, a number of criteria are listed below. Each school contact should describe how the particular student addresses the various criteria, in the restricted word count (no other supporting documents will be accepted). All short-listed candidates will be required to attend a virtual panel interview to qualify for consideration as a finalist.

Schools are asked to inform their candidate of their nomination.

The shortlisted nominees will be notified by email, following the panel interviews and will be expected to attend the Awards & Gala Dinner in London on 30 October 2014, with a member of their business school.

Selection criteria

Academic Achievement

  • Strong record of academic achievement
  • Contribution to group dynamics/leading group discussion and inciting debate/good overall team player
  • Most valuable contribution to programme development (giving feedback/constructive comment).

Business School Initiatives

  • Shows potential for leadership, entrepreneurial and innovation
  • Commitment to the future development of the business school and the MBA – devoted to enhancing the value of the MBA in the market and business education in general
  • Good school representative/ambassador (e.g. staff/student liaison).

Career Progression/Potential

  • Contribution to the international dimension of the course/assisting with integration of overseas students or playing a mentoring role
  • Most improved/benefited from the MBA in terms of own career progression.

Judging

Those candidates short-listed by the Association of MBAs will be invited to attend a face-to-face interview with the Judges on Monday 27th October at the Association of MBAs offices in London. There will be six shortlisted candidates, three finalists, with one overall winner chosen by the judges. The four finalists, including the winner, will be announced at the Awards & Gala Dinner in London on the 30th of October 2014.

The award will be presented in front of a prestigious gathering of business leaders, international Deans and Directors, distinguished MBA alumni and journalists. 

Prizes

The winner of The Independent MBA Student of the Year Award receives a cash prize of £1,000

The 3 runners-up will each receive a cash prize of £500.

The two remaining shortlisted candidates will receive a notable mention and a certificate.

All the finalists will gain media coverage in The Independent, The Independent on Sunday and Ambition, the Association’s member's publication. 

Timetable

  • 30 May 2014 - closing deadline for entries
  • June 2014 - the successful shortlisted candidates will be announced
  • 27  October 2014 - panel interviews will take place in London
  • 30 October 2014 - the winners will be announced at the Association of MBAs Awards and Gala Dinner
