Candidate Profiles 2007

Please find below the profiles submitted by the two winners of the elections for the International Management Board. Note that the Association of MBAs is legally bound to reproduce the information exactly as received from the candidates.

Name: Steve Hooker

MBA (school & date): University of Strathclyde 84-89

Occupation: Purchasing Manager

Brief Details of Experience:
I have a degree in Chemistry and a M.B.A from the University of Strathclyde. I have worked in world class organisations in the food, fmcg, retail, consultancy and chemical industries. This included working for Mars (Masterfoods) and Kingfisher/B&Q.  My experience covers all functional departments, including, Plant Management, Business Development, R&D, Technical Management, Training, Internal Consultancy, Purchasing, Project and Change Management.

I worked and lived in France for 10 years and I have led teams based in Austria, China, France, Holland and Germany. In addition, I have led global teams and been responsible for Business Development in Asia, Africa, and Ireland

Key Skills:
I work for Burton’s Foods (second largest biscuit manufacturer in the UK) working on strategic projects to either reduce costs or increase our product range. This has involved work in the Middle East, Eastern and Southern Europe, with, effectively our competitors.

I have a strong record in developing and implementing strategy.

Many times in my career I have been asked to go in and solve business opportunities (problems!).

Being previously a communication manager I would like to improve our communication and dialogue with our members

The skills from developing global competencies for Mars will be of use to AMBA.

Statement:
My objective is STILL to make AMBA a world class organisation that members, globally, want to join and remain.

Over the last three years I have enjoyed my time helping the organisation advance. Having said that, AMBA still has a lot to do in today’s competitive world and I wish to finish the job.

What will I do? - Create value for members.

1.    Increase the awareness of the value of AMBA accredited MBAs to the business world. We have sweated blood and tears for our MBAs, we need its value augmented.
2.    Improve business virtual networking by use of blogs, webprofiles, webcasts and webmeetings.
3.    Boost local Face-2-Face networking.
4.    Develop strategic alliances with other business schools and companies.
5.    Advance the career development and support services.
6.    Provide ongoing training and development.
7.    Increase the commercial orientation of AMBA.
8.    Create special interest groups e.g. Finance
9.    Further increase dialogue between the association and all members.
10.    Use the strength, skills and experience of the UK base as a springboard to grow. Whilst business is global, the Association membership is 85% UK based. My experience (my membership lapsed when in France), and that of others I have spoken to, shows that we have poor international membership retention.

On a personal level I am a great believer in networking so feel free to link into me , I am on most business networks, though most active on www.linkedin.com. Please feel free to contact me directly via steve@hookeruk.com with any views you have.

Name:  MISS BRYONY MOORE

MBA (school & date): HENLEY MANAGEMENT COLLEGE/BRUNEL UNIVERSITY 1988/89 (graduated 1992)

Occupation: DIRECTOR OF AN INTERNATIONAL, PURE-PLAY BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCER

Brief Details of Experience:
I joined Xchanging as Co-Founder and Head of Service, May 1999, with the sole intention of taking a business from start-up to IPO. We floated in April this year, achieving 199th on the FTSE.
For nine years in the 1990s I was a Management Consultant; delivering strategic and tactical solutions for Standard Chartered and Slazenger, for example.
Previously, I spent six years in sales and marketing Braun – three in the UK and three at the HQ in Germany.
Before this, I worked six years with Black & Decker in customer service, sales, new product development and marketing.

Key Skills:
My technical skills relate to customer relationship management. In particular, they include Service Definition, Service Measurement and Service Governance.
I’m also strong on the emotional skills of empathy, intuition and communication.

Statement:
I have been a member of the Association for 18 years and as a result of my own apathy made minimal use of its wide range of services.  Why is that I wonder?  Mainly, I think it is because I have been working to take a business from start up to the FTSE 250 in 8 years.  Focusing on Sales, Service and Customer Relationships has absorbed me totally. My part in this is now done and I’m retiring to a part-time role from the end of the year.
With the prospect of having more time to do other things and share some of my experiences of growing a service business and managing different customer types I welcome the opportunity to stand for the IMB.

I would like to offer up my time and knowledge to help the Association have a clear view of its identity and to further develop its relationship with the three constituent groups in the MBA environment: students/graduates, employers and business schools; with increased emphasis on the first two.  This I believe will improve and secure a sound commercial base.

I look forward to being able to articulate clearly what I get from the Association because I have experienced it first hand not just read about it on the website or in the newsletter.

If you would value my support in developing the quality of the relationship between the Association of MBAs and all its members then please give me your support and elect me to the International Management Board.  Thank you!
